A Broader Way

Broader Way is an organization created by two of the greatest and most well renowned Broadway stars of all times, Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs. Created in 2010, and is meant to provide underprivileged girls find an “outlet” or “self-expression.” It helps children find their interests and roles in theatre. It also includes things other than just musical theatre, such as tennis, swimming, fine arts, and more. The first ever “camp Broader Way” was created this summer and welcomed 31 girls to their camp, changing their lives and giving them a chance to do what they love. The creators Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel are an amazing couple who were in both RENT and Wicked. In addition, Menzel was in Glee and explored a major subject; adoption. Menzel and Diggs are no stranger to making a difference in the lives of others. This camp is a blessing to many and goes to show how musical theater continues to make a difference in the lives of others.

RENT

RENT was written by Jonathan Larson and highlights the issues of AIDS awareness by showing the lives of those living in poverty in New York, many of which have AIDS and attend “life support” meetings where they discuss the struggles they must go through on a day to day basis. With many characters, RENT is filled with fantastic story lines and although AIDS awareness is the biggest message in this production, equality is illustrated as well. With the characters in this musical, many of them are couples, and homosexual couples at that. Although RENT does not come out and directly talk about accepting peoples as gay, they still show it. Throughout the musical, the gay characters are treated just the same as the heterosexual characters. This shows the audience that just because someone’s sexual preference is different than what is seen as ‘normal’, they can still be treated like everyone else. This musical was later made into a movie with the original Broadway cast. This allowed it to affect many more.

For Good by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth (from the musical, “Wicked”)

Like a comet pulled from orbit,
As it passes a sun.
Like a stream that meets a boulder,
Halfway through the wood.
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better,
But because I knew you,
I have been changed for good.

A huge issue in RENT is AIDS awareness. RENT was created in 1996, only a few years after the Ryan White matter had surfaced, which caused a great ruckus in the world, the state of Indiana especially. Many people refused to go near Ryan White, a child with AIDS, because they were afraid of catching the disease. In RENT that thought was refuted. It did not directly state that AIDS cannot be contracted through simple physical contact; however it showed contact happening without the fear contracting the disease. This helped many viewers with this opinion change their thought process, which is an amazing thing to do. Unfortunately, Larson tragically died the night before his creation opened on Broadway. He was unable to see the amazing impact it had on the world. Rent is still running to this day.

“We Call it ‘Wonderful’

When it comes to judging a book by its cover, a saying that’s been around for ages, Wicked does a wonderful job. Of course, Elpheba is judged from the very beginning, which highlights this issue. In addition, one of the most significant ways this can be related to the real world is through racial issues. This matter of discrimination of non-Anglo Saxon individuals is seen throughout the musical. Although Elphie tries so hard to prove that she is just the same as all her other classmates, she is still treated poorly because of the color of her skin and is blamed for dire events that happen in the land of Oz. Throughout history, this has been a recurring problem. African American’s especially get blamed for things such as crimes even though there are many prestigious African Americans in society today. By allowing the audience to fall in love with Elphaba, they see how wrong the discrimination towards her is, which causes the audience to realize its wrong and hopefully avoid discrimination, as well as recognize that although one may be different from them, they could truly be good inside.
